Renovation of Historic Chester Building Receives ‘Good’ Award

St Werburgh Street, Chester Renovation

The Chester Civic Trust awarded the Renovation of Facades at 6-12 St Werburgh Street, Chester as one of the ‘good’ winners in its annual ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Awards’.

Work to the front elevation of the Grade II listed property was project managed by commercial property experts Legat Owen who also manage the property on behalf of the landlord.   The renovation work was undertaken by local company Frontier Joinery.

Each year the Chester Civic Trust presents awards to buildings, projects and community and cultural initiatives as nominated by its members.  Their aim is to recognise good design and initiatives and to draw attention to things in the built environment that could and should be better for the benefit of the city.

The judges said: “During 2024 numbers 6-12 in the Street were overhauled and repainted – they now look spectacular – the black and white decoration helping to highlight the superb ornately carved timber including figures representing Hugh Lupus, Saint Werburgh and Queen Victoria.”

The building was designed by John Douglas, one of the leading architects of Victorian Chester.  Constructed around 1895-97, it is a fine example of the black and white revival which Chester is renowned for.
